Biographical Information[edit]
The sixth pick overall in the 1989 amateur draft, outfielder Paul Coleman made his professional debut that year with the Johnson City Cardinals, hitting .233/~.298/.349 with 58 strikeouts in 172 AB. Appalachian League managers named him the 9th-best prospect in the league that season. Promoted to the Savannah Cardinals in 1990, Coleman slipped to .209/~.279/.321 and was caught stealing 7 times in 10 tries.
Sent to the Springfield Cardinals in 1991, Paul batted only .185/~.190/.258 and struck out 49 times while drawing only one walk in 45 games. No longer a prospect by any considerations, the 21-year-old remained a part-timer in 1992 with the St. Petersburg Cardinals. Coleman hit .271/~.292/.329 in 21 games. He finished his time in the Cardinals system in 1993 with the Arkansas Travelers, posting a line of .244/~.300/.372 with 97 strikeouts. He only produced 67 runs in 123 games.
Resurfacing in 1996, Coleman appeared for the Abilene Prairie Dogs and batted .334 and slugged .510. He was third in the Texas-Louisiana League in batting average.
