Biographical Information

Pitcher Paul Bargas was selected by the Colorado Rockies in the 13th round of the 2009 amateur draft. With the Asheville Tourists the following year, he was 5-4 with a 3.59 ERA and 5 saves in 58 games. Following that season, he was dealt to the Minnesota Twins for Jose Morales. He played for the class-A Fort Myers Miracle until 2010 when it was discovered that he had primary central nervous system lymphona, a rare form of brain cancer. He spent most of the time in treatment in Los Angeles, CA until his death in 2012. He died in 2012 at age 23.

Early years

Paul Bargas was born on October 13, 1988, in Riverside, California. His parents are Paul Sr and Kimberly Bargas. He was the eldest of three children with one sister, Diana, and one brother, Jhonny. He graduated from Riverside North High School in 2006, playing baseball there and becoming a team captain during his senior year.

Baseball career

In 2009, Bargas was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 13th round (391st overall). He was sent to the Casper Ghosts and played 6 games (1 start) with them. He was then transfered to the Tri-City Dust Devils. There, He played in 13 games with a record of 3-1. He also struck out 24 batters and had an ERA OF 1.59. The following season he played for the class-A Asheville Tourists. He spent the whole season there, playing in 58 games with an ERA of 3.59, 5 saves, 64 strikeouts and 19 walks.

On December 16, 2010, Bargas was traded to the Minnesota Twins for catcher José Morales, but he never played a game for the organization. Upon arrival at the following Twins spring training, he complained of severe headaches and disorientation and was then diagnosed with the cancer.

Death

Sadly, Bargas then missed the whole 2011 minor league season. He spent the last years of his life in treatment at the UCLA Medical Center. He died on June 26, 2012, at the age of 23 after battling cancer for nearly 2 years.
