Biography[edit]

Otis Clymer played six seasons in the major leagues and was also with the Minneapolis Millers for six years. He and Roy Zimmerman are the only major leaguers born in Pine Grove, PA.

Clymer played at Buffalo in 1904 before coming to the majors in 1905, where he was a regular in a Pittsburgh Pirates outfield that included Hall of Famer Fred Clarke, Ginger Beaumont and outfielder/third baseman Tommy Leach. In 96 games, he hit .298 with 16 extra base hits. After an abbreviated season, he was purchased by the Washington Senators and played for them from 1907 to 1909. On October 2, 1908, he hit for the cycle, going 4-for-4 with three runs scored against the New York Highlanders. He hit only .196 in 45 games in 1909 and spent part of the season with Minneapolis, where he would play from 1909-1914, reaching a peak batting average of .342 in 1911. In 1913, he came back for part of the season to play in the majors again, splitting 44 games between the Chicago Cubs and Boston Braves.

The former center fielder died tragically by driving his automobile off the 7th Avenue viaduct in St. Paul and falling 70 feet to his death. He is buried at Willow River Cemetery in Hudson, Wisconsin, where he was the owner of a Ford dealership. Through 2019, there has been one other major leaguer named Clymer, Bill Clymer, and he was also born in Pennsylvania.
