Biographical Information[edit]

Osvaldo Martínez began 2010 in AA and reached the major leagues that September.

The Florida Marlins took Martínez in the 11th round of the 2006 amateur draft. He signed with scout Carlos Berroa. In his pro debut that year with the GCL Marlins, he hit .263/.335/.316 while being used as a utility infielder. He did little in 2007, batting .184/.262/.228 for the Jamestown Jammers and going 0 for 1 for the Jupiter Hammerheads. He had 14 runs produced to 13 errors.

Osvaldo made big strides in 2008 with the Greensboro Grasshoppers, putting up a .296/.331/.411 line though he fielded only .922 at shortstop. With Jupiter in 2009, he hit .254/.323/.321 and stole 16 bases in 20 tries, while improving his fielding percentage to .953 at short. His 67 double plays at short led the Florida State League.

On September 30, 2009, Martinez was shot three times in a drive-by, mistaken-identity shooting in his hometown of Carolina, PR.

Opening 2010 with the Jacksonville Suns and still only 21, Osvaldo was hitting .300/.390/.383 after 77 games, already setting a career high of 57 runs. He was the only Puerto Rican player picked for the 2010 Futures Game.
