Biographical Information[edit]

Omar Dueñas has pitched in the Austrian Baseball League and for the Austrian national team.

He debuted with the 2017 Attnang-Puchheim Athletics, giving up two runs in two innings. [1] He gave up four runs for Austria in 2/3 IP in the 2017 European Championship U23. [2] For 2018, he had a 2-3, 9.55 record with 33 walks in 27 1/3 IP. He gave up 10 runs in 6 innings in the 2018 Federations Cup. [3]

In '19, he was 2-1 with a 9.11 ERA and improved his control somewhat (27 BB in 27 2/3 IP). He continued to progress in 2020, at 4-3, 4.32 with 30 walks in 58 1/3 IP. He led Austria in innings pitched, was 6th in K (46) and tied for 4th in walks. [4] He fell back to 1-2 with a save and a 6.04 ERA in 2021, striking out 30 and walking 10 in 25 1/3 IP for continued improvement in K:BB and BB/IP rates.

Despite his struggles in '21, he made Austria's senior national team for the first time. In the 2021 European Championship, he made one appearance. Starting against Bronze Medal-bound Italy, he walked Noel González but then went 1-2-3 against Leo Ferrini, Dario Pizzano and Vito Friscia. In the 2nd, the wheels came off. He walked Alberto Mineo, Ernesto Liberatore and Federico Celli in order. Erick Epifano hit a bases-clearing double and Mattia Mercuri hit a two-run shot. Dueñas walked González, then was relieved by Paul Astl, who let the inherited run score, giving Omar a six-run inning with no outs. His 54.00 ERA for the Euros was not the highest as Sergii Shtapura was at 81.00. [5]
