Northeastern Illinois University was known as Illinois Teachers' College: Chicago North from 1965 to 1967 and Northeastern Illinois State College until 1971.

Alumni include Alan Hargesheimer and Bob Koopmann.

Northeastern Illinois was a Division-I Independent from 1992-1994 and a member of the Mid-Continent Conference from 1995 to 1998 when the school dropped all athletics as a cost cutting move.
