Biographical Information[edit]
Nobuyuki Ebisu pitched in Nippon Pro Baseball for 9 years and won a ERA title.
Ebisu was drafted by the Orix BlueWave in the second round of the 1990 NPB draft. He spent the first seven years of his career in the NPB Farm Leagues, only pitching 6 games combined with the big club. Ebisu pitched 11 games in 1998, but his ERA was a terrible 6.86. He changed his number from 30 to 65 after this season.
The Orix sent Ebisu to Seattle with Ichiro Suzuki and Nobuyuki Hoshino to join the spring training of the Seattle Mariners before the 1999 season, and he improved as his ERA lowered to 3.86 in 10 relief outings. The Kobe native finally broke out in 2000. He was 8-2 with a Pacific League-leading 8 complete games, and won his only PL ERA title (.18 ahead of runner-up Shingo Ono). His 3.27 ERA was the highest among ERA title winners in NPB history. Ebisu pitched two shutout innings with three Ks in 2000 NPB All-Star Game 2.
Ebisu was 5-9 with a 3.68 ERA in 2001, but that was his last productive season. The BlueWave traded him to the Yakult Swallows for Kota Soejima in the middle of the 2003 season, and the Yakult released him after he allowed 18 runs in 22 innings. The Kintetsu Buffaloes picked him up, but Ebisu was unable to pitch any games with the big club in 2004, then he announced his retirement after that season.
Ebisu's repertoire included a fastball (peak 93.2 mph), slider, shuuto and sinker.
Overall, Ebisu was 15-16 with a 4.04 ERA, struck out 192 and pitched 342 2/3 innings in 9 years in the NPB.
