Biographical Information[edit]

Noboru Yamashita pitched in Nippon Pro Baseball for 8 years.

Yamashita was signed by the Kintetsu Buffaloes in 1953, and he was 12-14 with a 2.45 ERA in his rookie year. He completed a no-hitter against the Takahashi Unions on August 7, and he became the first rookie to throw a no-hitter in two league era. Yamashita was 10th in strikeouts (between Atsushi Aramaki and Yoshinobu Uemura) in the Pacific League. He then went 17-15 with a 3.06 ERA in 1955, and he ranked 6th in strikeouts (between Yasuo Yonekawa and Isao Wada). He also tied Yonekawa and Mamoru Otsu for 4th in appearances.

The Hyogo native had a 5-11 record with a 3.83 ERA in 1956, and he went 7-6 with a 3.07 ERA in 1957. He was 4-15 with a 4.47 ERA in 1958, and he was 5th in losses (between Masayuki Dobashi and Shiro Ito). Yamashita slumped to 2-3 with a 5.27 ERA in 1959, and he was released. The Nankai Hawks picked him up, and he allowed 6 runs in 4 1/3 innings in 1960. He only pitched 6 games for the Hawks in 1960, then he announced his retirement.

Overall, Yamashita was 47-67 with a 3.35 ERA, struck out 538 and pitched 1,014 2/3 innings in 8 years in NPB.
