Biographical Information[edit]

Noboru Matsuyama pitched in Nippon Pro Baseball for 13 years.

Matsuyama was signed by the Hiroshima Carp in 1952, and he was 1-5 with a 5.24 ERA in his rookie year. He only pitched 5 games in 1953, then he broke out in 1954. He was 18-13 with a 3.01 ERA, ranking 6th in the Central League in wins (tied with Ryohei Hasegawa) and 7th in complete games (18, between Katsuhiko Ishikawa and Takumi Otomo). He was also selected into the 1954 NPB All-Star Game, and he pitched 3 shutout innings with 2 strikeouts (against Tokuji Iida and Hidefumi Kawamura). Matsuyama was 10-13 with a 3.96 ERA in 1955, then he had a 2-7 record with a 4.13 ERA in 1956. On April 14, 1955, he nearly pitched a no-hitter against the Chunichi Dragons. However, rookie Toshio Naka had a bunt single in the 9th inning and broke it up; that was Naka's first career hit. Matsuyama pitched 18 games with a 4.15 ERA in 1957, but he only pitched 8 games in 1958 due to a shoulder injury. He announced his retirement after the 1958 season.

Overall, Matsuyama was 31-44 with a 3.80 ERA, struck out 144 and pitched 579 2/3 innings in 7 years in NPB.
