Biographical Information

Infielder Nick Madrigal was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the 17th round of the 2015 amateur draft but did not sign, choosing to go to the Oregon State University instead. As a sophomore there, he posted a .380 batting average. In 2018, he went into the amateur draft as one of the top-ranked college players in the country and was selected 4th overall, by the Chicago White Sox. On July 1st, he agreed to a contract including a signing bonus of $6.4 million. The Sox awaited the end of the 2018 College World Series, where Madrigal was part of the championship-winning Oregon State team, to discuss contract terms.

He was named to the roster of the American League team for the 2019 Futures Game.

He was called up to make his debut with the White Sox on July 31, 2020. He went 0 for 8 over his first two games before getting it going on August 2nd when he had a four-hit game, scored two runs and drove in one in a 9-2 win over the Kansas City Royals. However, two days later, on August 4th, he had to leave a game against the Milwaukee Brewers with a separated shoulder, an injury that occurred while being thrown out at third base in the 3rd inning. He was immediately placed on the injured list. He returned on August 29th and played just about every day from that point forward, ending up at .340 in 29 games, but with only 3 extra-base hits, all doubles. In the postseason, he went 3 for 12 as the White Sox lost out to the Oakland Athletics in a closely-fought Wild Card Series. In 2021, he was off to a good start as he hit .304 with a bit more power (10 doubles, 4 doubles and 2 homers) in 54 games. However, his season came to a sudden stop on June 9th when he tore a hamstring in attempting to run out an infield single. He was lost for the remainder of the season, but was still traded to the Chicago Cubs on July 30th, along with P Codi Heuer, in the deal that brought closer Craig Kimbrel to the White Sox.
