Biographical Information[edit]

Naoki Sugiyama caught in Japan and Taiwan for 11 years combined.

Sugiyama was drafted by the Yomiuri Giants in the 6th inning of the 1987 NPB draft, and he spent his first seven seasons in the NPB Farm Leagues, only having 16 at-bats combined with the big club. He hit .297/.366/.297 in 30 games in 1995, and he played a career-high 66 games with a .252/.288/.347 batting line in 1996. Sugiyama had a .238/.337/.440 batting line in 1997, but he slumped to .143/.207/.214 in 1998. He then hit .184/.262/.263 in 1999, and he was 7-for-52 in 2000. Sugiyama was accused of forced obscenity after the 2000 season, and the Giants released him. He signed with the Chinatrust Whales in 2002, and he hit .310/.375/.429 in 16 games.

Overall, Sugiyama had hit .210/.274/.298 with 110 hits and 12 homers in 10 seasons in the NPB.
