Biographical Information

Nanny Fernandez was primarily a third baseman who also played some at shortstop and in the outfield. He was with the Boston Braves in 1942 and again in 1946 and 1947 after three years of military duty during World War II.

He hit .318 for the Milwaukee Brewers in 1948 and .312 with 21 home runs and 128 RBI for the Indianapolis Indians in 1949, earning him the MVP award in the American Association. This earned Nanny one last major league shot, with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1950. Not quite living up to the Pirates' expectations, he returned to the minors for the balance of his career.

Nanny, who had hit .327 in 177 games for the 1941 San Francisco Seals in the Pacific Coast League extended schedule before the war, returned to play for several more seasons in the Coast League with the Seattle Rainiers and the Sacramento Solons in the 1950s.

Fernandez spent 14 active years (1939-1955) in pro baseball. He hit for a .248 average in four big league seasons and .285 in his minor league time. When Fernandez retired in 1955, he had appeared in a total of 1,789 pro baseball games.

Manny was retired as a marine clerk in the longshoreman's union when he died September 19, 1996, at age 77 in Harbor City, CA.
