Montgomery Lions

From BR Bullpen

The Montgomery Lions (located in Montgomery, AL) began play when the Class B Southeastern League was formed in 1926. They won the second half title in their inaugural season but lost to the Columbus Foxes in the league finals. That year, Nap Kloza led the league with a .380 batting average, Burney Acton scored a league-best 103 runs, and Lawton McWhirter paced the circuit with 19 wins. In 1927, the Lions finished second again, and Mel Simons had a league-high 198 hits for the club.

The Lions won the second-half title in 1928, then defeated the Pensacola Flyers for the league championship. The team's pitching staff was anchored by Floyd Van Pelt, who led the circuit with 26 wins and 183 strikeouts, and Ralph Stewart, who notched a league-best 2.24 ERA. The next year, they won the first half and defeated the Tampa Smokers for their second consecutive title. Outfielder Nap Kloza, catcher Bailey Tipton, and pitcher Pat Moulton made the league's All-Star team.

In 1930, the Lions finished a distant fourth behind the Selma Cloverleafs, despite the presence of All-Star outfielder/pitcher Woody Abernathy. Following that season, the league folded and the Lions ceased operations.
