Biographical Information

"Manager Davis is looking for a good man to take Jack Warner's place, and has been sizing up Monte Beville, of Columbus, the star catcher of the Interstate League. Hasn't Indianapolis a string on him?" - Sporting Life, August 18, 1900

Catcher/first baseman Monte Beville played in the American League in 1903 and 1904; he also umpired one game each of those two years. He was with the New York Highlanders both years, and also played for the Detroit Tigers in 1904. Monte started in the minors as early as 1896 and was with the Toledo Mud Hens in 1900 and Kansas City in 1901.

He played for the Milwaukee Brewers from 1905 to 1908. The book The American Association Milwaukee Brewers has a photo of him with the 1905 team, and says he tied for the team lead in doubles. Beville almost did not play for Milwaukee. The April 15, 1905 issue of Sporting Life indicates that he was claimed by the Kansas City Blues and, when awarded to Milwaukee, he went to play (at first) for a team in Harrisburg, PA that was outside of organized baseball instead.

There were a number of other players named Beville in the majors and minors around the same time, but Beville is not listed as related to any of them.
