Biographical Information

Not to be confused with the heavyweight boxer, this Mike Tyson was a very good defensive second baseman with the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1970s. He made his major league debut on September 5, 1972, starting at second base against the Montreal Expos. Teammate Ken Reitz also made his debut that day, starting at third base; the two would anchor the Cardinals' infield for the remainder of the decade, except for the 1976 season, which Reitz spent with the San Francisco Giants.

When Tyson was sidelined by an injury in 1979, Ken Oberkfell took over at second base and hit .301. Now expendable, Tyson was dealt to the Chicago Cubs in the offseason for pitcher Donnie Moore. Failing to produce for the Cubs, Tyson was released prior to the 1982 season, but not before being reunited with Reitz for the 1981 season.

Tyson's son, Torre Tyson, has played, coached, and managed in the minor leagues.
