Biographical Information[edit]

Mike Thompson was selected by the San Diego Padres in the 5th round of the 1999 amateur draft. In 2004, Thompson showed his first signs of serious major league potential with the AA Mobile BayBears when he went 10-2 with a 3.41 ERA.

Thompson started the 2006 season with the AAA Portland Beavers. He was called up to the Padres on May 17th, defeating the Arizona Diamondbacks in his major league debut. In that contest, he became the first pitcher in major league history to score a run before throwing his first pitch as the Pads batted around and scored 9 runs in the top of the 1st inning. However, Thompson was optioned back to Triple-A on July 1st.

After beginning 2007 as a member of the Padres bullpen, he was sent back to the minors, but he returned for three more stints in the big leagues that year. After the season, he became a free agent and signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates organization.
