Biographical Information[edit]

Utility infielder Mike Sember had very brief cups of coffee with the Chicago Cubs in 1977 and 1978.

Raised in Hammond, Indiana, Sember went to the University of Tulsa on a football scholarship but ended up starring on the baseball diamond. As a freshman, he played alongside future big leaguers Steve Rogers, Jerry Tabb, and Steve Bowling on the squad that finished third in the 1971 College World Series. He led the team with a .372 average as a senior, and overall during his college career, he hit .352 with 22 home runs and 100 RBIs. He was inducted into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame in 2011.

After college, Sember was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the second round of the 1974 amateur draft. He reached the majors with the Cubs in 1977, almost making the Opening Day roster and earning a call-up in August when Mick Kelleher was sidelined with a broken thumb. He played sparingly for Chicago, going 1-for-4 while getting into just 3 games. He spent most of the following summer back in the minors with the AAA Wichita Aeros, hitting .239 with 13 homers before being called up by the Cubs again in September. He got into 9 big league games, mostly as a third baseman or pinch runner.

Prior to the 1979 season, Sember was released by the Cubs. He then signed with the Toronto Blue Jays organization, appearing in 49 games for the Syracuse Chiefs in what would be his final pro season.
