Biographical Information[edit]
Mike Macha was first drafted in the 5th round (103rd overall) of the 1975 amateur draft by the Cleveland Indians, but opted not to sign. He was then drafted in the secondary phase of the January 1976 amateur draft, by the Atlanta Braves.
His first professional season was relatively mediocre - he hit only .248. His batting average gradually rose during his minor league tenure, and it rose high enough to make the Braves call him up in 1979 when he was 25 years old. He made his major league debut on April 20th of that year. He did not fare well in his first Major League stint - his .154 batting average was unimpressive.
After his maiden major league season, Macha was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 1979 Rule V Draft. He started the 1980 season on the Blue Jays' roster. Again, his statistics were not Major League quality - he didn't get a single hit in 8 at-bats.
After his short time with the Blue Jays, the Detroit Tigers purchased his contract only two days after his final game in the majors. He finished out the year, and didn't play any more baseball afterward. His final major league game was May 26th.
Various sources over the years, including some normally reliable printed sources, have listed him as the brother of contemporary player Ken Macha. However the two were unrelated, and the issue was finally closed in 2020 when Mike's father passed away and published obituaries did not list Ken among his children.
