Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Mike King was the fourth overall pick in the 1980 amateur draft. He spent four seasons in the minor leagues, never reaching the majors.

Drafted by the Oakland Athletics, King began his professional career with the Ogden A's in 1980, going 0-4 with a 7.71 ERA in six games (five starts) in his first pro season. He also walked 30 batters in 21 innings that year, while striking out only 11. On December 11 of that year, he was traded to the Chicago Cubs for Keith Drumright and Cliff Johnson.

he split 1981 between the Quad Cities Cubs and Midland Cubs, going a combined 5-5 with a 6.24 ERA in 25 games (24 starts). He again struggled with the walk, surrendering 111 bases on balls in 114 innings.

In 1982, King went 8-12 with a 6.29 ERA in 25 starts for Midland. On November 2, 1982, he was traded to the Kansas City Royals for Jim Wright. He then wound up in the New York Yankees organization, pitching for the Nashville Sounds and Columbus Clippers in 1983. That year, he went 5-3 with a 4.14 ERA in 16 games (seven starts).

In 1983, his final season, King went 3-6 with a 5.34 ERA in 28 games (eight starts) for the Sounds.

Overall, King went 21-30 with a 5.87 ERA in 100 games (69 starts). In 390 2/3 innings, he walked 325 batters and struck out only 244.
