Biographical Information

Mike "Skinner" Hopkins appeared in one game for the Pittsburgh Pirates on August 24, 1902, going 2-for-2 with a single and a double. It was a road game against the Cincinnati Reds. He played catcher, making no errors. He was 29 at the time and was a semi-pro player in Pittsburgh, PA at the time. His regular job was with the railroad as a brakeman, and eventually as a conductor.

The 1902 Pirates were a top team, winning 103 games that year and losing only 36. However, the position of catcher was a bit of a problem, with regular Harry Smith hitting only .189. A number of other catchers were tried at the position, with Ed Phelps becoming the # 1 catcher in 1903 and Smith continuing as back-up. Hopkins got to accompany the Pirates on a road trip to Cincinnati for a Sunday doubleheader because Jack O'Connor, another of the team's catchers, was unavailable. Manager Fred Clarke tried out a few rookies that day, including pitcher Harvey Cushman who made his debut in the second game. He was hit hard and was removed, as well as C Chief Zimmer, who had caught the opening game, in the 3rd inning, giving Hopkins his chance. The game ended after 7 innings, with Cincinnati winning, 9-4, and Hopkins forever holding a perfect batting average.
