Biographical Information[edit]

Mike Gambino has been a minor league player, a scout, a minor league coach and a college coach.

Gambino hit .313 in college and set a Boston College record with 78 hits in 2000 (since broken). He made All-Big East Conference at 2B. He signed with the Boston Red Sox as an undrafted free agent. In 2000, he played for the GCL Red Sox (3 for 14, 2 BB) and Augusta Greenjackets (.286/.348/.317 in 20 G). In 2001, he was with Augusta (2 for 26, 2B, 2 BB) and the Lowell Spinners (.243/.314/.325 in 45 G). Overall, he had batted .235/.306/.298 with 32 runs and 29 RBI in 77 games as a pro, while fielding .948, primarily at 2B.

Gambino was a special assistant to the Red Sox in 2002 then coached for the Spinners once their season began that year. He returned to Boston College as assistant coach from 2003-2005, then was a Detroit Tigers scout for two years, signing Schuyler Williamson. From 2007-2010, he was an assistant coach at Virginia Tech. Boston College then brought him back as head coach and he went 17-33 his first year. He won 291 games in 13 seasons, second-most in school history, before becoming head coach at Penn State University.
