Biographical information[edit]
Mike Fischlin was a light-hitting middle infielder in the major leagues, playing from 1977 when he made his debut as a September call-up by the Houston Astros, until a single appearance as a pinch-runner with the Atlanta Braves in 1987. Most of his appearances were with the Cleveland Indians, with which he played from 1981 to 1985. Overall, he hit .220 in 517 games, with only 3 homers.
He was originally drafted by the New York Yankees in the 7th round of the 1975 amateur draft, but was traded to Houston on June 15, 1977 along with fellow prospects Randy Niemann and Dave Bergman in return for Cliff Johnson. The trade ended up helping both teams as Johnson became an important spare part on the Yankees' two World Series-winning teams in 1977 and 1978, while all three players who came in return became useful major leaguers. Fischlin did eventually play for the Yankees, but in 1986; he hit .206 in 71 games as a utility infielder for them, in a rather typical season.
After his playing career, he was a minor league manager for a couple of seasons and later headed the player development department of the Scott Boras Corporation.
