Biographical Information

Mike Stutes made his major league debut in 2011.

The Los Angeles Dodgers took Stutes in the 32nd round of the 2004 amateur draft out of high school but he did not sign. Stutes was 4-5 with a 5.40 ERA as a freshman at Santa Clara University in 2005. Transferring to Oregon State University, he was 8-2 with a 3.10 ERA in 2006. He was 5th in the Pacific-10 Conference in ERA. In 2007, he had a 12-4, 4.07 record, .228 opponent average and 129 strikeouts in 132 2/3 innings. He was one win behind Pac-10 co-leaders Josh Satow and Mike Leake and tied for 7th in NCAA Division I. He was 10th in Division I in strikeouts. He was on teams that won the 2006 College World Series and the 2007 College World Series. The St. Louis Cardinals drafted him in the 9th round in 2007 but he again did not sign. He fell to 4-7, 5.32 as a senior in 2008. Overall, his 287 strikeouts placed him second in OSU history. The Philadelphia Phillies took him in the 11th round of the 2008 amateur draft. The scout was Dave Ryles.

Stutes began his pro career with a bang for the Williamsport Crosscutters (2-1, 1.33, 16 H in 27 IP) then had a 5-1, 1.48 record with 20 hits and 53 K in 42 2/3 IP for the Lakewood BlueClaws in 2008. He had a .152 opponent average for the year. Promoted to the Reading Phillies in 2009, Michael was 8-8 with a 4.26 ERA. He tied for the Eastern League lead with 27 starts and tied Jeanmar Gomez for fifth with 109 strikeouts.

In 2010, Stutes was moved to the bullpen. He pitched for Reading (3-0, 2 Sv, 3.79, over a K per inning) and the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (4-1, Sv, 3.10). Opponents hit just .208 against him overall. He began 2011 with Lehigh Valley and allowed 3 runs (2 earned) in 10 innings, going 2-1, striking out 14 and picking up a save in his last appearance.

In late April, he was called up to replace the injured Jose Contreras on the roster. In his major league debut, he replaced Cliff Lee with a 4-0 deficit in the 8th against the Arizona Diamondbacks; Lee had been lifted for a pinch-hitter. Stutes retired Chris Young, Kelly Johnson and Justin Upton for a 1-2-3 pro debut. He stayed with Philly for the remainder of the year, pitching quite well. In 57 games in relief, he was 6-2, 3.63 with 58 strikeouts in 62 games. However, he was hit hard in his only postseason appearance, giving up three runs in a third of an inning facing the St. Louis Cardinals in the NLDS.

When Stutes reached the major leagues, all sources listed his birthplace as Lake Oswego, OR, where he attended high school. However, he confirmed to Bill Carle of SABR's Biographical Research Committee, that he was in fact born in Metairie, LA.
