William Carle

Biographical Information[edit]

Bill Carle is the head of SABR's biographical research committee, whose mission is to find and ascertain all vital statistics for former players and managers in one of baseball's major leagues. A SABR member since 1977, he has headed the committee since 1988.

The Committee publishes a bi-monthly newsletter which is one of the principal sources for this site and its parent, Baseball-Reference.com, to update birth, death, and other personal information about players. The committee, which includes crack researchers such as Peter Morris has been able to find players who for decades were only known by their last names, or whose playing record was conflated with that of another player with a similar name, erasing them form the historical record.

Bill Carle lives in Bartlesville, OK. In 2013, he was honored with the Chadwick Award in recognition of his contribution to baseball research.
