Biographical Information[edit]
Melissa Armstrong debuted for Team Canada in 2007. In the 2008 Women's Baseball World Cup, she allowed 12 runs and 11 hits in 6 innings, struggling against both Japan and Australia. Canada won the Silver Medal. She was with Canada in the 2010 Women's Baseball World Cup. In the 2012 Women's Baseball World Cup, she made two appearances, both against Australia. In the first, she started and allowed 3 runs in 3 1/3 IP before Jessica Bérubé relieved in a 5-4 win. In the Bronze Medal game, she relieved Vanessa Riopel with one out in the 4th and a 8-3 lead against Australia; she allowed one inherited runner to score. She left with the bases loaded and one out in the 5th, relieved by Hannah Martensen; all three runners scored but Canada wound up with a 17-13 win for the Bronze. Armstrong finished the event with a 9.69 ERA and .435 opponent average; only Brinley McLaren had a higher ERA for Canada.
The Saskatoon native again had Canada's second-highest ERA in the 2014 Women's Baseball World Cup, at 12.60; only Daniella Matteucci was higher. She relieved Riopel against the USA and allowed 3 runs in 1 2/3 IP; Amanda Asay relieved her. In her other outing, she relieved Cindy Saavedra in the bottom of the 9th with a 5-5 tie against Australia and allowed a game-losing hit to Tahnee Lovering.
In the 2015 Pan American Games, the veteran was 1-0 with a 4.51 ERA for the hosts as they won a Silver Medal. She fanned 6 in 4 2/3 IP but allowed 8 hits. She got a win over Puerto Rico in relief of [{Kate Psota]], tossing 3 2/3 shutout frames (6 K, 4 H, 1 BB) in a 3-2 victory.
