Biographical Information[edit]
Mays Copeland began his professional career in a blaze of glory, going 17-12 and 16-10 in his first two minor league seasons. But he did not come up to the parent St. Louis Cardinals during their World Series championship year in 1934, surfacing the next year, 1935, for one game.
His big league appearance came on April 27, 1935. He pitched to several Pittsburgh Pirates batters after relieving Bill Hallahan with one out in the 4th inning, the Bucs having already pushed 4 runs home. The Pirates had four future Hall of Famers in the lineup that day - Paul Waner, Lloyd Waner, Arky Vaughan and Pie Traynor. The first batter Mays faced, pitcher Jim Weaver, laid down a sacrifice bunt for the second out, but he gave up a run scoring single to Lloyd Waner, then made an errant pick-off throw to first base. He finished the inning by getting Paul Waner to ground out to first base. The Cardinals managed to score 4 runs in the bottom of the 4th, but after Copeland allowed a double to the first batter in the 5th, Babe Herman, he was replaced by Bud Tinning; when the Babe came home to score, Mays' ERA was 13.50.
