Biographical Information[edit]

Mayo Acosta has been a minor league catcher.

Acosta was signed by Tampa Bay Devil Rays scout Junior Ramirez in 2006. He hit .234/.312/.339 as the main catcher for the 2007 Princeton Devil Rays. With the same club (renamed the Princeton Rays) in 2008, his batting line improved to .268/.306/.411, he threw out 48% of opposing base-stealers and he fielded .992. Splitting time with Mark Thomas for the 2009 Hudson Valley Renegades, he batted .255/.316/.346 and had 11 passed balls in 37 games at catcher.

He fielded .991 and threw out 47% of runners in 2010, which he split between the Bowling Green Hot Rods (.237/.278/.288 in 32 G) and Renegades (.271/.335/.447 in 51 G). His 7 home runs for Hudson Valley tied for the team lead. In 2011, he played for Bowling Green (.221/.341/.403 in 23 G) and the Charlotte Stone Crabs (.203/.285/.312 in 60 G). As an organizational backup, he played 22 games for Charlotte (.278/.346/.514), 30 games for the Montgomery Biscuits (.264/.358/.495) and 9 games for the Durham Bulls (4 for 21, HR, 2 BB). For the year, he gunned down 45% of attempted base thieves. For the 2013 Biscuits, he hit .197/.259/.321, but was that was still better than their other catcher, Thomas (.151/.195/.274) - #3 catcher Curt Casali easily out hit both. With the Toros del Este in the Dominican League, he hit .292/.329/.472 while starting ahead of Dan Butler and Gary Sanchez.

Acosta was Durham's #3 catcher in 2014, hitting .133/.215/.193 in 32 games behind Ali Solis and Casali. With the Toros in the winter, he batted .123/.238/.192 while starting ahead of Yasmani Grandal and Tony Sanchez. He was 4 for 48 with a walk, double and 15 whiffs for the 2015 Bulls. In the 2015 Pan American Games, he was 2 for 14 with a walk, double, RBI and five strikeouts, starting ahead of Mario Mercedes for the Dominican national team, but his defense again was the reason for his playing time, throwing out 3 of 6 who tried to steal.

In 2018, he was appointed as a bullpen catcher by the Rays, replacing Scott Cursi.
