Biographical Information

Catcher Alí Solís reached the majors with the San Diego Padres in 2012.

Solís signed with the Padres in February 2005; Robert Rowley was the scout. He hit .240/.340/.322 for the DSL Padres that summer. In 2006, he was 14 for 56 with 5 doubles and 7 walks for the AZL Padres and threw out 42% of attempted base-stealers. The Mexicali native split 2007 between the AZL Padres (.253/.304/.362 in 27 G) and Eugene Emeralds (1 for 5, HR). He spent 2008 with Eugene (.323/.432/.484 in 8 G) and the Fort Wayne Wizards (.159/.250/.265 in 35 G, backing up Luis Martinez).

In 2009, the 21-year-old was with the Fort Wayne Tincaps (.208/.278/.500 in 13 G), San Antonio Missions (4 for 27, BB, 10 K) and the Lake Elsinore Storm (.203/.248/.319 in 45 G). With Lake Elsinore, his main team, he fielded .990 at catcher and threw out 37% of attempted base thieves; he again backed up Martinez. The next year, Solís was with San Antonio (2 for 18), Lake Elsinore (10 for 37, 2B, 4 HR, 2 BB) and the Tigres de Quintana Roo (.382/.411/.618 in 21 G).

Alí spent most of 2011 as San Antonio's starting catcher; he produced at a .263/.308/.396 rate in 73 games, fielded .981 and threw out 34% of attempted base-stealers. He also saw limited action with the Tucson Padres, going 8 for 38 with 2 doubles, a walk and 14 strikeouts. In the 2011 Pan American Games, he was Mexico's starting catcher as well as their top offensive performer. He was 4 for 12 with two walks, a double and a homer. Defensively, he allowed 2 steals but threw out 3 runners and had no errors. His 2-run homer off Jeff Marquez was the big blow in Mexico's 3-2 upset of Team USA. Despite this performance, he sat out the Bronze Medal game against Cuba in favor of Mario Santana; Mexico lost, 6-0.

Solís spent the majority of 2012 with the San Antonio Missions, hitting .283 with 6 home runs and 40 RBI in 87 games. He earned a September call-up to the majors and made his big league debut on September 16th against the Colorado Rockies, going 0-for-1 as a pinch-hitter.
