Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Jack Kranick had only seven games of experience at AA or higher when he made his major league debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates on June 27, 2021, facing the St. Louis Cardinals. The limited professional experience did not phaze him, as he pitched five perfect innings, retiring all 15 batters he faced while striking out three, and received credit for the 7-2 win. He was unable to go further as a rain delay of over an hour forced him to sit down, and out of prudence the Bucs summoned Duane Underwood Jr. to take over on the mound when play resumed. A lead-off double in the 7th ended the bid for a combined no-hitter or perfect game. He benefitted from some good offensive support, as he batted in the 1st inning before he even took the mound, something that had only happened to Paul Maholm in franchise history, back in 2005. In spite of his heroics, he was sent down to the minors a couple of days later. He ended up making 9 starts that season and going 2-3, 6.28.
In 2022, he pitched only twice in the majors, both times in relief, for a total of 5 innings during which he allowed no runs on three hits. Injuries curtailed is minor league appearances as well, as he pitched in just four games between the AAA Indianapolis Indians and Class A Bradenton Marauders, the latter on a rehabilitation assignment. 2023 was more of the same as he was limited to 9 outings between the same two minor league teams, going 0-2, 4.35 in 20 2/3 innings. Before the start of the 2024 season, he was claimed off waivers by the New York Mets but spent that year in the minors as well. However, he did manage to get some regular work on the mound, appearing at three different levels and going 2-2, 3.82 in 45 games, including 8 starts. He pitched a total of 70 2/3 innings, struck out 64 batters and picked up 2 saves.
In 2025, he took advantage of a number of injuries to Mets pitchers in spring training to start the season with the major league team.
