Biographical Information[edit]

Catcher Maverick Handley was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 6th round of the 2019 amateur draft, out of Stanford University, where he studied biomechanical engineering. As a junior with the Cardinal, he had hit .290 with 5 homers and 24 RBIs in 59 games. He began his pro career that same year with the Aberdeen Iron Birds of the New York-Penn League, hitting .202 in 41 games.

He then had to sit out the 2020 season, because the minor leagues were shut down by the COVID-19 pandemic. When he returned in 2021, he was back with Aberdeen, although by then the Minor League Reorganization had placed them in the High-A East, two levels above where they had been when he had last played for them. He appeared in 60 games that season, with a slash line of .201/.316/.337, with 5 homers and 39 RBIs. In 2022, he was in AA with the Bowie BaySox and continued to improve his hitting game, finishing at .236/.352/.417 in 78 games, with 11 homers and 45 RBIs, as he was starting to look like a prospect.

In 2023, he was a non-roster invitee as the Orioles' major league spring training. On February 28, he had to perform double duty at a Grapefruit League game at the Pittsburgh Pirates' spring ballpark in Bradenton, FL: after the top of the 9th, the Pirates had officially won the game, 7-4, but the two teams decided to play on, completing the bottom half of the inning, in other to give some of their young players, particularly Orioles pitcher Ofreidy Gomez, some game action. The problem was that the regular umpires had completed their day's work, so the two teams did it sandlot style, with Handley calling balls and strikes while also catching, and coaches making the calls on the bases. Gomez pitched a scoreless inning, and everyone could go home happy while the fans were treated to some free baseball.
