He began his career with a 1.97 ERA in 17 relief appearances with the Staten Island Yankees in 2014, then mostly as a starter in 2015, he struck out 112 batters in 106 2/3 innings. He played for three different teams that year, in Class A and AA. Back in the bullpen for 2016, he had a 2.50 ERA with 13 games finished between the Trenton Thunder in Double A and his first taste of Triple A with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. He was back at Trenton to start 2017. he went 2-1, 1.67 in 15 games as a reliever, then on July 2nd was sent to the Baltimore Orioles for future considerations. He finished the season with the Norfolk Tides where he was 3-1, 2.20 in 17 games. He was back in Norfolk for all of 2018 but could not maintain his high level of performance from the previous season as he ended up at 2-8, 4.60 in 39 games, including 12 starts. He did strike out 105 batters in 94 innings.
Wotherspoon was sent back to AAA at the end of spring training in 2019, but before the International League season got under way, he was called up to the major league Orioles on April 2nd and made his major league debut the next day, pitching the final two innings of a 5-3 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. He came in with Toronto holding a 2-0 lead but after a scoreless 7th inning, he allowed 3 runs on 4 hits in the 8th, including a solo homer by Randal Grichuk. The O's scored 3 runs in the top of the 9th to make the final score appear closer than the game had been.
