Biographical Information[edit]

Matt North was a minor league pitcher; his father Jay North was a scout.

Matt was taken by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 9th round of the 2006 amateur draft, one round after Allen Craig. He was 2-5 with a 6.41 ERA and 1.98 WHIP for the Johnson City Cardinals that summer, tying for 8th in the Appalachian League in losses. In 2007, he was 0-2 with a 4.50 ERA for the GCL Cardinals. Back with Johnson City in 2008, he was sharper (3-1, 3.83, 42 K:12 BB in 42 1/3 IP). He missed 2009 to injury, though, and did not recover. With the 2010 Batavia Muckdogs, he managed a 4-3 record despite a 2.46 WHIP and 10.41 ERA.

Overall, North was 9-11 with a 6.26 ERA in 45 minor league games (22 starts). In 119 1/3 IP, he allowed 156 hits and 61 walks while striking out 94. He later was pitching coach for Diablo Valley College in 2013 and Solano College in 2014. He died at age 25. Sources include DVC bio, Obituary
