Biographical Information[edit]

Matt Lloyd reached AA and has played for Team Canada.

Lloyd was on Canada's team in the 2014 Junior Pan American Games [1] as they won Bronze. He hit .409 as a high school senior. [2] He was excellent as a redshirt freshman in junior college in 2016, hitting .371 with 60 runs and going 7-0 with a 2.78 ERA, fanning 58 in 55 IP. The team made the 2016 NJCAA Division I Baseball World Series. [3]

Transferring to Indiana, he batted .301/.393/.554 with 11 homers and 46 RBI in 58 games, going 3-2 with 9 saves and a 2.78 ERA. He tied Riley McCauley for 4th in the Big Ten Conference in saves, tied for 3rd in doubles and was 5th in slugging. [4] He was second-team All-Conference as a utility man. [5] In 2018, he fell to .275/.356/.458 but was even better on the hill (4-2, 7 Sv, 1.54). He was first-team All-Conference as a utility. [6] He produced at a .280/.390/.573 clip with 17 homers and 59 RBI in 59 contests and went 0-1 with five saves and a 2.70 ERA. He was the "at-large" All-Big Ten pick. [7]

The Cincinnati Reds took him in the 15th round of the 2019 amateur draft. The scout was Ben Jones. [8] While he had been a solid pitcher in college, the Reds only used him in the field, as a 1B/OF primarily. He split 2019 between the Dayton Dragons (.224/.322/.421 in 23 G) and Billings Mustangs (.245/.333/.449 in 27 G). The 2020 minor league season was wiped out by the COVID-19 pandemic. He returned in 2021 to bat .235/.333/.480 with 7 homers in 98 AB for the Chattanooga Lookotus, also playing four games with the ACL Reds (presumably a rehab stint). He hit only .187/.291/.333 in 20 games for the '22 Lookouts while battling a leg injury.

Released by Cincinnati, he was picked up by the Sioux City Explorers and started 2023 on fire (.367/.487/.689, 26 R, 28 RBI in 25 G) before joining Canada for the 2023 Pan American Games Qualifier. In the opener, he hit cleanup and played third base against Panama. He hit a two-run homer off Julio Denis with Jake Sanford aboard for the first runs of the event. [9]
