Matt Blake

Biographical Information[edit]

Matt Blake was appointed pitching coach of the New York Yankees in 2020, succeeding Larry Rothschild.

He very much fit the profile of a number of recent coaching appointments in the major leagues, as his playing experience consisted only of four seasons with the varsity team when he was studying psychology and philosophy at the College of the Holy Cross. He never played professionally, instead got into coaching at the high school level in suburban Massachusetts and with a private coaching firm, Cressey Sports Performance, based in West Palm Beach, FL.

In 2010, he became an associate scout for the Yankees, then became a pitching coach in the Cape Cod League in 2015. That year,he joined the Cleveland Indians organization as a minor league pitching coordinator. He also worked with the team's player development staff and was eventually named Director of pitching development. He was very much into analytics and was credited with helping the rise of a number of young hurlers within the organization, such as Trevor Bauer, Mike Clevinger, Shane Bieber or Adam Plutko.
