Biographical Information

Matt Angle is an outfielder who reached the majors in 2011 with the Baltimore Orioles.

Angle hit .440 with 41 steals during his high school career. He was All-State in football, but not in baseball, and also competed in basketball and track. In his first year with Ohio State, 2005, he hit .307/.399/.355 with 13 stolen bases in 16 tries. The following year, he hit .369/.447/.439 with 63 runs scored in 57 games with 25 stolen bases in 29 attempts. He was third in the Big Ten Conference with 31 walks, 4th in average, 4th in hits (79), tied for 4th in steals and 5th in OBP. He led the Big Ten in runs scored and made the All-Conference outfield. That summer, he won All-Cape Cod League honors after hitting .292/.412/.350 for the Cotuit Kettleers. As a junior in 2007 - his final year with the team - he hit .366/.462/.454 with 22 stolen bases in 29 attempts. He was drafted by the Orioles in the seventh round of the 2007 amateur draft, beginning his professional career that season. The scout was Rich Morales.

He played for the Aberdeen IronBirds in 2007, hitting .301/.451/.352 with 34 stolen bases (caught just four times), 47 walks and 60 runs scored in 66 games. He was 3 steals behind New York-Penn League leader Brandon Whiting. In 2008, he hit .287/.385/.379 with 37 stolen bases in 48 tries and 82 runs for the Delmarva Shorebirds. He paced Orioles minor leaguers in steals and his .996 fielding percentage led South Atlantic League flyhawks. The next season, he played for the Frederick Keys (123 games) and Bowie Baysox (eight games), hitting a combined .292/.374/.350 with 42 stolen bases in 54 attempts. He was 4th in the Carolina League with 40 steals and 5th with 78 runs. He joined Derrick Robinson, Tim Fedroff and Che-Hsuan Lin as the league's All-Star outfielders. He was 5th in the league in average and again first in outfielder fielding (.993). He led the Orioles farm chain in runs scored (84), hits (148), walks (63) and steals (42). He hit just .237 for the Phoenix Desert Dogs in the high-hitting Arizona Fall League.

With the BaySox and Norfolk Tides in 2010, Angle hit .278/.351/.327 with 29 stolen bases while being caught six times. After hitting .266 with 20 steals in 81 games with Norfolk in 2011, he was recalled by Baltimore following the All-Star break. He took the roster spot of the injured Vladimir Guerrero. In his debut on July 17th, he batted lead-off and played left field against the Cleveland Indians, and went 0 for 3 with a walk. He was sent down to the minors before getting his first major league hit, which came in his second big league stint. On August 25, he snapped an 0 for 13 streak with a bunt single off Anthony Swarzak of the Minnesota Twins. In 31 games, he batted .177/.293/.266 with a lone big fly and 7 RBI. The Los Angeles Dodgers claimed him on waivers in February 2012 and he spent the remainder of his career bouncing around the minors. In 2018, he was named assistant baseball coach at his alma mater.
