Matheus Lelis has played in the minors and for the Brazilian national team.
He signed with the Oakland Athletics. He debuted as a pro with the 2019 DSL Athletics, hitting .203/.302/.230 in 29 games. The 2020 minor league season was wiped out by the COVID-19 pandemic. He had three more years with the DSL A's but his production did not improve - .146/.288/.146 in 2021, .165/.307/.194 in 2022 and .149/.293/.179 in 2023. He had batted .169/.299/.190 in 334 plate appearances over 116 games in the minors, fielding .975 at catcher and throwing out 20% of would-be base-stealers.
The 22-year-old made Brazil's team for the 2024 South American Championship, where he split the backstop duties with Gabriel Do Carmo. He debuted against Chile, hitting 6th and catching. His first time up, against Javier Araya, he hit into a force. He finished the event 0-for-5 with a walk, hit-by-pitch two runs and two RBI for the runners-up, handling 14 chances error-free. [1]
