Biographical Information[edit]
Outfielder Mason Williams of the New York Yankees hit a two-run home run off Ubaldo Jimenez of the Baltimore Orioles in his first major league game on June 12, 2015. The homer came in his second at-bat, in the 4th inning, in an 11-3 loss. Starting in centerfield and batting 9th that day, Williams went 1 for 2 before giving way to pinch-hitter Chris Young in the 6th.
Williams was selected by the Yankees in the 4th round of the 2010 amateur draft.
He made his major league debut with the Yankees midway through the 2015 season but played only 8 games, hitting .286 with 3 doubles and a homer for a .571 slugging percentage. However, his season ended early because of right shoulder surgery in August and while he was out of action, he was passed by various other players on the Yankees' list of prospects. He was only able to return to action in 2016 in late July, starting a rehabilitation assignment with the GCL Yankees, then made a stop with the Class A Tampa Yankees before playing 31 games in AAA with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees, where he hit é296. New York had not originally planned to call him up in September, but those plans changed on September 13th when RF Aaron Judge suffered an oblique strain, likely putting him out for the season. The Yankees then turned to Williams to provide help in the outfield while the team was still in the hunt for a postseason slot.
