Biographical Information[edit]

Mason McCoy made his major league debut with the Toronto Blue Jays on August 30, 2023, striking out as a pinch-hitter for Ernie Clement in the bottom of the 8th and taking over for him at shortstop in the 9th in a 7-0 win over the Washington Nationals. Both players had been called up from AAA a couple of days earlier when SS Bo Bichette and 3B Matt Chapman had been placed on the injured list simultaneously. He had been acquired in a trade with the Seattle Mariners on July 26th in return for P Trent Thornton.

McCoy was originally drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 6th round of the 2017 amateur draft out of the University of Iowa. He played in their system from 2017 to 2021, sitting out the 2020 season when the minor leagues were shut down by the COVID-19 pandemic. He reached AAA with the Norfolk Tides in 2021, hitting .221/.288/.368 in 112 games. He had been considered an up-and-coming prospect before that year, making the All-Star team in the New York-Penn League in 2017 and in the Eastern League in 2019, but just before the start of the 2022 season, on April 7th, he was sent to the Mariners for no reported return as the Orioles wanted to clear his spot on the 40-man roster. He had a solid season for the Tacoma Rainiers of the Pacific Coast League that year, hitting .256 with 21 homers and 63 RBIs in 124 games, to be named an organizational All-Star. In 2023, he was hitting .234 in 87 games for Tacoma and was considered the team's best defender when he was traded to Toronto. With the Buffalo Bisons, he hit .192 in 21 games before his call-up. On September 3rd, he scored a key run as a pinch-runner, replacing Santiago Espinal at first base after he had led off the top of the 9th with a single off closer Justin Lawrence of the Colorado Rockies with the game tied at 5. He advanced to second on a ground ball out by Vladimir Guerrero Jr. then scored the go-ahead run on a two-out single by Whit Merrifield. The Blue Jays won the game, 7-5. He went back to Buffalo when Bichette returned to action on September 8th.
