Biographical Information[edit]

Out of high school, Masafumi Takeda was a 6th-round pick of the Chunichi Dragons in the 1968 NPB draft. He debuted in Nippon Pro Baseball in 1972, allowing 9 runs (7 earned) in 21 innings over 21 relief stints, walking 13. In 1973, he gave up four runs in 5 2/3 IP and walked 5. He improved to 5-2, 3.21 with 3 saves in 1974, giving up 29 hits in 41 2/3 IP. He pitched three games in the 1974 Japan Series, allowing two runs in four innings.

In 1975, Takeda was 5-3 with 2 saves and a 3.71 ERA. He allowed 66 hits in 80 1/3 IP, but 15 of them were home runs. In 1976, Masafumi fell to 0-1, 8.33 with 42 hits and 16 walks in 27 1/3 IP.

Takeda moved to the Crown Lighter Lions in 1977 and went 1-2 with a 5.33 ERA in 24 games. He was 1-5 with a 3.41 ERA in 28 games in 1978. He was then traded with Masashi Takenouchi, Akinobu Mayumi and Yoshiharu Wakana to the Hanshin Tigers for star slugger Koichi Tabuchi and Kenji Furusawa.

Takeda was 0-1 in 7 games for Hanshin in 1979, allowing 19 baserunners and 11 runs in only 5 1/3 IP to end his career. Overall, he had been 12-14 with 5 saves and a 4.44 ERA in 199 games in NPB. He hit .280/.308/.280 in 25 career at-bats.
