Biographical Information[edit]
Outfielder Marc Sagmoen was named Big Eight Conference Player of the Year for the 1993 season at the University of Nebraska. He was selected by the Texas Rangers in the 13th round of the 1993 amateur draft.
He made his major league debut on April 15, 1997, on the 50th anniversary of Jackie Robinson's historic debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers, wearing Robinson's old uniform number, 42. That day, Major League Baseball decided to retire the number across the majors in honor of Robinson, but the players already wearing it - including Sagmoen - were allowed to keep it. He was thus the last player in major league history to make his debut wearing the historic number, though he didn't keep it; he eventually switched to #37.
In the 5th inning of his third game on April 17th in Kauffman Stadium against the Kansas City Royals, Sagmoen collected his first Major League hit off Tim Belcher - an inside-the-park home run. That wound up being his only big league home run, and it was not his first RBI. In the 6th inning of his debut game, James Baldwin walked him with the bases loaded to score Lee Stevens in The Ballpark in Arlington.
