Marc Lipson pitched for four years in the minor leagues, compiling a 13-14 record and saving 47 games.
Lipson was with the University of Georgia baseball team from 1988 through 1989. In 1988, he made 34 appearances, tied for fifth in NCAA Division I. In 1989, Marc threw in 37 contests, tied for fourth in NCAA Division I. The next year, his school would win the 1990 College World Series. Lipson was not around, though, as he had been signed by the Minnesota Twins.
Marc debuted with the 1989 GCL Twins and went 4-1 with 7 saves. In 31 2/3 IP, he allowed 23 hits and 6 walks while whiffing 32. His ERA was 1.42. With the Elizabethton Twins, he had a 1-0 record, 3 saves and a 5.02 ERA. He again struck out about a batter per inning (14 K) but walked 8 in 14 1/3 IP.
In 1990, he was again with two minor league teams. With the Kenosha Twins, he was 1-4 with 20 saves and a 2.53 ERA. He allowed 38 hits in 53 1/3 IP. When Rich Garces was promoted from the Visalia Oaks to AA, Lipson took Garces' spot as Visalia closer. He was 1-0 with 12 saves and a 1.64 ERA in 17 games. Lipson finished four saves behind Garces for the lead in the US-based minors.
Returning to Visalia in 1991, Marc was replaced as closer by Carlos Pulido. Lipson went 5-4 with a 3.54 ERA in 49 games. His WHIP was 1.57. With the 1992 Orlando Sun Rays, he went 0-3 with one save and a 5.45 ERA and 1.65 WHIP, not too much worse though than closer Garces. He also spent 22 games with the Fort Myers Miracle and was 1-2 with 4 saves and a 1.50 ERA there. He allowed only 33 hits in 54 IP with the club, walking 13 and fanning 41.
