Biographical Information

Manuel Cáceres starred for the Dominican national team when they won their first world title, at the 1948 Amateur World Series. He hit .522 and slugged .870, with ten RBI. He tied Luis Morales for the tourney lead in average, tied Luis Morales and Miguel Corral for the most hits (12), was one RBI behind leader Eduardo Green and one homer behind Corral. He was the first Dominican in the Puerto Rican Winter League; used as a pitcher, he was 12-1 with a 2.23 ERA for the Criollos de Caguas in 1950-1951, 3 wins behind leader Mike Clark. He had hit .203 in 1949-1950.

He played for the Tejedores del Filtta in the Colombian League next, going 2-4. He had a complete game win for the Tigres del Licey over the Leones del Escogido May 6, 1951 for the first win by a Dominican in the new Dominican League. He was 7-2 with a 3.46 ERA for that year, but battled injuries after that. He was shot during a 1962 coup in the Dominican Republic. He was inducted into the Dominican Sports Hall of Fame in 1985.
