Biographical Information[edit]
Manny Mantrana was one year ahead of Rafael Palmeiro in high school. An infielder, he was drafted in the 10th round of the 1981 amateur draft out of high school by the Atlanta Braves. He was subsequently drafted by the Texas Rangers, Baltimore Orioles, and Cleveland Indians out of junior college, but didn't sign each time. He eventually signed with the Detroit Tigers
Mantrana began his pro career with the 1986 Gastonia Tigers. He moved from the Tigers chain to the New York Mets chain during the 1987 season, and finished his career in 1988.
Mantrana was the head coach at his high school alma mater for four years, then was an assistant at Miami-Dade College for a year. He was the head coach at St. Thomas University for 12 seasons, taking the team to the NAIA College World Series three times and was named Florida Sun Conference Coach of the Year honors on three times. He then moved to University of Texas-Pan American as head coach for the 2009 season. The school merged to become the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in 2016 and he remained head coach for two more years, retiring with 662 wins in 21 seasons as a coach to become Special Assistant to the Athletic Director at UTRGV.
