Formerly the Lynn Sailors, the team from Lynn was renamed the Pirates in 1983 as they became an affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates. They went 77-62 in their only year of play for the second-best record in the Eastern League, 18 1/2 games behind the Reading Phillies. They lost in the finals of the EL playoffs 3 games to 1 to the New Britain Red Sox. They were guided by future Pirates coach Tommy Sandt. Their attendance was only 31,575, easily the lowest in the EL that year.
Lynn scored 633 runs, 4th in the league, and allowed 620, 4th-fewest. The team had two All-Stars in SS Rafael Belliard (.262/.316/.316) and OF Benny Distefano (.271/.357/.496, 25 HR, 92 RBI). Mike Bielecki (15-7, 3.19) led the league in strikeouts (143) and tied for the most wins while placing 5th in ERA. Jeff Zaske (5-3, 24 Sv, 2.18, 72 K in 70 1/3 IP)led the EL in saves.
The team relocated to Burlington, Vermont to become the Vermont Reds.
