Biographical Information[edit]

Luke Stuart had a good cup of coffee with the St. Louis Browns in 1921, going 1-for-3, with that one hit being a home run. Stuart's home run came in his first at-bat, making him the first American League player to perform this feat. This was only recognized post-facto, through the efforts of SABR; before that, Hall of Famer Earl Averill had been widely credited with having been the first to do this.

He was one year older than teammate George Sisler.

He was in mid career at the time, having started in pro ball in 1913, playing several seasons for Winston-Salem. Stuart and Ernie Shore were both at Guilford College in 1913. After his time in the majors he played several seasons for Tulsa.

The Sporting News reports that he was a scout with the New York Yankees after retiring.

According to the June 25, 1947 issue of The Sporting News, Stuart "...was found dead in his office at Winston-Salem, NC with a bullet wound through his heart and both wrists slashed. A gun was found beside his body. The county coroner pronounced his death as a suicide. Stuart had been in ill health for some time."
