Biographical Information

Luke Gregerson was a two-way threat in college, winning Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference player of the year award after hitting .335 as a rightfielder and posting a 0.68 ERA as a closer. He was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 28th round of the 2006 amateur draft. He was signed by scout Scott Melvin and made his pro debut that summer. He was then traded to the San Diego Padres in March 2009.

On July 9, 2011, he played a central role in one of the strangest games in the history of the San Diego Padres. When he took the mound as his team's fifth pitcher against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the bottom of the 9th, the game was still scoreless, and his four predecessors had managed to keep the Dodgers hitless. He retired the first two batters he faced, Matt Kemp and James Loney, but allowed a double to Juan Uribe with a two-strike out to end the no-hit bid (the Padres had never managed to throw one, a streak that finally ended when Joe Musgrove threw one in 2021). Dioner Navarro then managed to poke a single into center field, and Gregerson lost not just the no-hitter but the game as well. What was even more remarkable is that the Padres managed only one hit of their own, a single by Cameron Maybin.
