Biographical Information[edit]
As a senior in high school, Luis de los Santos hit .635 with 8 home runs. He never hit a major league home run.
The Kansas City Royals drafted de los Santos in the 2nd round of the 1984 Amateur Draft from Newtown High School and he gradually rose through their minor league system. De los Santos made his major league debut on September 7, 1988 and also spent some major league time with the Royals in 1989. His final major league appearances came in 1991 with the Detroit Tigers. After a year away from affiliated ball, de los Santos played at AAA for the Florida Marlins in 1993. He then spent several years playing in Mexico, Taiwan, and South Korea. De los Santos resurfaced one final time in the minor leagues in 2002 while playing 50 games for the AAA affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles.
In 2000, he set a Mexican League record by hitting in 36 straight games, breaking the mark held for 52 years by Roberto Ortiz. In 2009, he managed the Olmecas de Tabasco in the same league.
He also played in Taiwan and set a hitting streak record for foreign players in 1996, with 22 games. The mark was broken 12 years later by Gary Burnham.
After his playing career ended, de los Santos joined the coaching ranks. According to his 2006 Yakima Bears baseball card, he managed the DSL Diamondbacks. The year is not specified, but 2004 is the most likely. He then served as the hitting coach for Yakima in both 2005 & 2006.
De los Santos joined the Milwaukee Brewers organization in 2010. In the annual announcements of their minor league staffs from 2010-2017 de los Santos is mentioned as a DSL Brewers coach. Since no hitting coach was noted for these teams, he might have filled that position. He was the hitting coach for the DSL Brewers in 2018-2019 and was slated to return in that role in 2020 before COVID-19 shut down the minor league season. De los Santos was the hitting coach for the DSL Brewers 1 in 2021 and the DSL Brewers 2 in 2022.
In addition to his coaching efforts with the D'Backs and Brewers, de los Santos made two appearances as a coach in the winter Dominican League. He started the 2004/2005 season as a coach for the Leones del Escogido, but was fired on November 17th. The Leones called him back years later as a replacement hitting coach on January 10, 2011 while in the midst of the season-ending Dominican League tournament.
