Luis Machuca pitched five seasons in the minors.

Machuca was signed by the Cincinnati Reds three days after his 17th birthday, after having been scouted by Anibal Reluz. Machuca debuted as a pro with the 2005 VSL Reds, allowing 6 runs in 11 2/3 IP. In 2006, he went 4-0 with 3 saves and a 2.76 ERA for the VSL Reds. He was moved to the rotation in 2007 and was 7-3 with a 2.00 ERA for the DSL Reds, walking only 10 in 81 innings.

The Panamanian right-hander split 2008 between the DSL Reds (4-2, 3.03) and GCL Reds (1-3, 6.48). He was a late addition to Panama's provisional roster for the 2009 World Baseball Classic. He did not make the final cut. In 2009, he was 6-3 with a 2.34 ERA for the DSL Reds and 2-1 with a 2.40 ERA in 3 games for the GCL Reds. He ended his minor league career 24-12 with a 2.72 ERA. He helped Panama win Gold at the 2010 Central American Games.

He also appeared for Panama in the 2013 central American Games as they won the Bronze Medal. He remained with Panama for the 2013 Bolivarian Games, going 1-0 with 3 hits, no runs and six Ks in four innings in a win over Bolivia; Panama got the Gold. In the 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games, he had a 2.46 ERA, allowing two earned runs in 7 1/3 IP; he was beating Venezuela into the 8th but reliever Luis González lost it.
