Biographical Information[edit]

Shortstop Luis Borges began his professional career in 2000. He was signed by the Kansas City Royals and played for the GCL Royals his first year, but hit only .229/.285/.264 in 43 games. He moved to the Mexican League following that campaign, where he has remained ever since.

After struggling to get his bearings his first few campaigns, he broke out in 2004 by hitting .348/.389/.423 in 80 games for the Leones de Yucatan. After slumping in 2005 and 2006, he returned with another high-average campaign in 2007, hitting .325/.390/.410 with 123 hits in 106 games for Yucatan. He then hit .327/.379/.381 in 44 games with the Algodoneros de Guasave of the Mexican Pacific Winter League in 2008. He hit .319/.390/.385 for Yucatan in 2009, but struggled over the winter to a .207/.252/.250 line. He made his first Mid-Season All-Star Game that year.

He was again a Mid-Season All-Star in 2010, hitting .318/.374/.397 with only 11 strikeouts in 239 at-bats for Yucatan. Low strikeout totals were his tendency to that point. He had never whiffed more than 33 times in a season, though he'd walked as many as 55 times in a campaign. The trend would continue throughout his career. In 2011, the Mid-Season All-Star hit .313/.360/.389 in 97 games for Yucatan; he then hit .303/.331/.369 over the winter. He hit .306/.353/.378 in 111 games for Yucatan in 2012, but didn't make the All-Star team. For the winter, he moved to the Naranjeros de Hermosillo, with whom he hit .301/.353/.358. Though he was an All-Star again in 2013 -- hitting .312/.365/.379 in 104 games -- his days with Yucatan came to an end following the season. After an abundance of struggles in winter ball, he moved to the Saraperos de Saltillo for the 2014 campaign, hitting .363/.386/.460 in 108 games. He was 5th in the LMB in average, between Jon Del Campo and Gabriel Gutierrez and his 88 runs tied Emmanuel Avila for third (10 behind Chris Roberson and Agustin Murillo). He was again an All-Star, and again he struggled in winter ball (playing briefly for the Mayos de Navojoa and Yaquis de Obregon). He was the starting shortstop for the Mexican national team in the 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games, hitting .333/.380/.400 with two runs and two RBI in five games, fielding .972. He tied Del Campo for second on the team in average, behind Luis Suárez. Though his regular season slash line slumped to .288/.319/.320 for Saltillo in 2015, he was again an All-Star that year.

Borges became a Pittsburgh Pirates scout in 2018 and a hitting coach for the DSL Pirates 1 in 2019-2020 (though the 2020 season was not held due to the COVID-19 pandemic).
