Biographical Information[edit]
Lou Nagelsen played two games for the Cleveland Naps in 1912. His teammates included Nap Lajoie and Joe Jackson. He had three plate appearances, facing pitcher Carl Cashion of the Washington Senators and Eddie Plank of the Philadelphia Athletics. Plank shut out the Naps, with only four Naps players getting hits (Lajoie and Jackson each got one).
Sporting Life misspelled Nagelsen's name as Naegelson and also as Nagelson.
Lou was in the minors during 1911-1913, probably garnering some attention for his 1911 year with the Kalamazoo Celery Pickers when he hit .301 and led the team in home runs. Also on the team was Beany Jacobson, who went 26-9, and who had previously pitched in the American League from 1904-1907.
On the day that Lou made his major league debut, September 10th, the Senators won easily over the Naps. Manager Joe Birmingham used the opportunity to give five players their major league debuts that day. [1]
Another player with a similar name, Russ Nagelson, also played for the Cleveland team, many years later.
